The Flightless Extension typically is the same inside diameter (ID) as the tool string being advanced, however it can be fitted with a wide range of hollow stem auger Pin (male) and Box (female) connections, depending on rig spindle attachments.

The inside or “Tap” type is ideal for recovering hollow stem augers, because the mid-bodies are much larger then solid stem augers, making a corkscrew type almost impossible to apply successfully – so it is much easier to get the hardened threads of the “Tap” inside the coupling and make a straight pull.
